Let The Night Begin is the debut solo album from Troy Mercy, former Booker T. Jones and Fabulous Thunderbirds guitarist. Tim Carman (Parlor Greens, Canyon Lights, formerly of GA-20) produced this earthy and laterally-minded collection Mercy calls “Brave New Blues for a Mean Old World”.
Troy Mercy is a guitarist’s guitarist but, says Mercy, “None of that guitar stuff is worth a damn if it has to live in lame songs. To me the songwriting comes first, then the singing has to be there to tell that emotional story for the listener.”
Let The Night Begin features Mercy’s live drummer Harrison Foti, along with Tim Carman on four tracks. Marty Ballou (Peter Wolf, Danny Kortchmar, John Hammond Jr.) also plays bass.
The session was recorded live through vintage mics and glowing tubes. Dave Westner’s wood-fire-stove-heated family cabin on a pond in autumnal Plymouth, Mass was the scenery for this two-day Rock & Roll party.
Troy Mercy performs raw and wild vintage-toned Rock & Roll. It’s cracking guitar music surely, but it’s his singing and songwriting that stand him a cut above the six-string rabble. He earned his bones through years of touring with heavies such as Booker T (of The MGs) & The Fabulous Thunderbirds. He has performed with Blues originators like Hubert Sumlin, Billy Boy Arnold and Pinetop Perkins, and he played guitar on two Grammy® nominated albums with Kim Wilson.
